Barings Bank was at one time the oldest merchant bank in the City of London and has played an important role in the development of British and international finance from the late-eighteenth to the late-twentieth century. Barings played a significant role in major historic events, such as, financing the Louisiana Purchase.

This exhibition explores the history of Barings through the people depicted in The Baring Archive’s historic portrait collection. The collection mostly comprises of eighteenth to twentieth century personal and business portraits, which were commissioned from the leading artists of the day. The portraits not only tell the story of the family, its business and its people but also the development of portraiture over that period. More here >>
