Portrait of a Lady c.1815-20

Private collection

Private collection

This work in a private collection is considered close to Lawrence, c.1815-20, but the artist and sitter are so far unidentified. The frame is believed to be French, c.1800-25; the label on the reverse is from the workshop of Samuel Coombe, 331 Strand, London.

Ideas as to possible artists, or even sitter identity, are very welcome; please use the ‘add a comment’ facility below.

This painting, or a very similar one was in Country Life Feb 27 1962 p 458, where it was suggested that the portrait should be attributed to Richard Westall (1765-1836).

Sir Thomas Lawrence was taught by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Lawrence in turn helped William Robinson (1799-1839). I have had restored WR’s portrait of his wife which was in a similar sad state. (Handed down from WR’s sister’s side). The styles of Reynolds and Lawrence run through this period so the portrait of a lady could have been by any of their students.

Samuel Coombes was in business at 331 Strand from 1869 to 1901. So the label is later than the picture (and its frame). He was active as a carver and gilder, art dealer and picture restorer.
