Case Study 9: John Collier by Marion Collier (née Huxly) c.1882-1883

“Portrait of John Collier by his wife, Marion (NPG 6811). A label on the back of the frame, with Marion’s name and address, is clearly of the sort that artists fixed to pictures when sending them to exhibition. As well as helping with the date of the portrait – the Colliers moved address shortly after this – the label enabled the Gallery to trace its place of exhibition as the Summer Exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1883. This led researchers to a number of contemporary press comments and reviews. The fact that the portrait was shown at the fashionable Grosvenor Gallery gave it a context within progressive artistic and cultural milieus of the period.”
