The best way of working with and for disabled people is to establish partnerships with and seek advice from local and/or national help and representative organisations. Some of the main ones are listed below:

  • The United Kingdom’s Disabled People’s Council is the UK’s national organisation of the worldwide Disabled People’s Movement. They now represent some 70 groups run by disabled people in the UK at national level.
  • Disability Wales is the national association of disability groups striving to achieve rights, equality and choice for all disabled people in Wales.
  • Mencap is the leading UK charity working with and for people with learning difficulties and their parents and carers.
  • Action on Hearing Loss (formerly The Royal National Institute for the Deaf) is the largest charity representing the 9 million deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK.
  • The Royal National Institute for the Blind are the UK’s leading charity offering information, support and advice to over two million people with sight loss.
